Geraldine Carton

Geraldine Carton is a Dublin-based contemporary artist creating expressive portraiture and figurative paintings in oils. With a background in social work and socio-environmental activism, her interest lies specifically in the human condition and individual experience. She enjoys oscillating between humour and vulnerability to capture moments that further human connection and challenge status quos. Geraldine is passionate about art and its ability to encourage social change, and prioritises the storytelling capabilities of her work to broach issues that are important to her.

As well as working on her solo show, Geraldine is currently the focus of a documentary which follows the creation of this unique project, and the stories of the women who are taking part in it. This documentary is being lead by award-winning filmmaker Nicola Leddy, alongside an all-female production team. The film has received funding from the Catalyst Film Festival and will show there in early 2025.

A relatively new addition to Ireland’s contemporary art scene, Geraldine has been making her mark with pace. In the last three years Geraldine has exhibited with the RHA, Herman’s Art Auctioneers, The Art Riddler (also securing a coveted “golden ticket” which automatically grants her a place in the upcoming 2024 exhibit), as well as organising a successful group show in 2023 (“We’re New Here”, feat. 40+ artists) and more recently hosting women’s life drawing classes in The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.

Carton’s style is gentle and sensitive, whilst remaining emboldened via energetic brushtrokes and a vivacious use of colour. Her keen understanding of the female form allows for compelling storytelling in a unique and creative approach.

“Gather, Sisters” is a painting about the deep connecting force of sisterhood, and the joy that comes when we dare to lean into those more "mysterious"/ witchy elements together as women. 100cm x 100cm. €1200
